Organization of the Faculty

The Faculty of Modern Languages was established in 1969. It comprises six departments. The Department of General Linguistics examines the general structural properties of natural languages and the theoretical bases of electronic language processing. The Department of German deals with the various aspects of German language and literature.
Foreign languages and literatures are studied in three departments: English, Romance Languages and Slavic Studies. The Department of Rhetoric, the only one of its kind in Germany, focuses on the history, theory and theoretical analysis of the rhetorical use of language. It also offers practical instruction in rhetorical skills.
The Departments of German, English, Romance Languages, Slavic Studies and Rhetoric are located in the Modern Languages Building.

Teaching Staff and Students

The Faculty of Modern Languages includes forty professors and one hundred twenty-seven academic staff members.
5,500 students are enrolled in the Faculty. Most of these are studying in the Department of German.

The Dr. phil. is offered in each of the Master of Arts curricula.
The Faculty offers a Diploma in Media Studies as a further qualification.
Regional Studies in linguistics are also offered. These studies are organized and administered by the Faculty of Economics.

Research Facilities

The Faculty has a central library containing 310,000 volumes. Most of these are in open stacks. More than 1,000 current journals are on subscription. More than 3,500 microfiches are available.
Seven hundred twenty work-study places are in the library. An additional thirty are in the periodicals room.
Approximately thirty computers are available for use in the computer pool.
The Media Department provides technical assistance in research, teaching, and independent study. Audio-visual aids, language laboratories, and a language laboratory library are available.The Media Department also provides technical support for the Media Studies Program.
